The Day of the Pact (Ketsutaku no hi) is an important historical event that set up how magic and witch society would be run. It occurred at some unknown point in Zozah's history.

The Day of the Pact established the new set of laws regarding the use of magic that separated Witches—who could use magic, from Outsiders—who were no longer allowed. It also enforced what kinds of spells were allowed to be used and which ones were now forbidden, with that forbidden knowledge being forcefully buried and erased. The Day of the Pact represents the end of the old era when magic could be used by all, and the start of the current era.
Witches that uphold the laws of the Day of the Pact are called Pointed Cap Witches, while those who reject the laws and seek to return to the forbidden spells of yore are called the Brimmed Caps.

In the era before the Day of the Pact, magic was available for all to use, with no limit or regulation placed on who used it or how. It was common for kings and other nobles to have a witch at their service.[2] The great acts of these witches are described in many of Zozah's myths and legends. This freedom of magic was used for good, such as in Healingcraft, but also led to horrors such as being used for weapons of war, to create Monsters, and to commit other atrocities that harmed or permanently transformed living people, or devastated the landscape in ways that are still visible and dangerous in modern times.
On the Day of the Pact, a small faction of witches—the precursors to the modern Pointed Caps—decided to put an end to the many atrocities caused by the unrestricted use of magic. They wiped all memories of magic from the populace, only leaving a small number of trusted apprentices upon whom to pass their knowledge. The laws they put in place forbade witches from learning medicine and banned any magic deemed to be too dangerous for use, including attack magic and magic which permanently scarred or altered the environment. Above all other things, however, all spells cast directly on the human body were banned, which made illegal both magic used to transform and harm people as well as all forms of healing magic. These laws are still in place today.
