Silverwood trees are a type of magical tree used in the production of conjuring ink.
Description[edit | edit source]
Silverwood trees are primarily composed of sprawling and intertwining branches and roots, appearing not to have any typical structure or form. Their branches possess a sheen with a silver tone while alive, but upon withering, they turn pitch black. These withered branches are poisonous to both humans and the tree itself.[1] From the dead branches a liquid known as woodcruor can be extracted, becoming the unrefined form of conjuring ink. Harvesting the "blood" of Silverwood trees to use as ink is the only known way to use magic.
Silverwood trees are said to only take root in places in which they know they will find true comfort, where they will grow regardless of any other conditions.[2]
History[edit | edit source]
Because Silverwood woodcruor is the root of magic, there are a number of ancient legends and poems regarding Silverwoods and the birth of magic. According to one legend, a Silverwood once fell in love with a witch and offered up its blood as ink and its branches as wands.[3] Another poem, in line with the Silver Eve festival, tells of how a messenger of the heavens descended to the world and fell in love with a Silverwood maiden. Blessing her with the gift of magic, the Silverwood then shared that gift with humans, thus beginning the age of witches.[4]
