Witch Hat Atelier (とんがり帽子のアトリエ, Tongari Boushi no Atorie) is an ongoing seinen manga written and illustrated by Kamome Shirahama. It is published in the Morning Two monthly magazine/website by Kodansha, and began its serialization on July 22, 2016. It has been licensed for release in English by Kodansha USA, among several other translations.
An anime adaptation was announced in April of 2022, made under BUG FLIMS with a trailer being shown shown on July 4th, 2024.[1] It is stated to stream on CrunchyRoll in 2025.[2]
Plot[edit | edit source]
Coco, a humble dressmaker's daughter, has always been fascinated by magic and the witches who cast it, despite the strict precautions they take to hide their methods from the public. However, when Coco takes advantage of a golden chance to spy on the skilled witch Qifrey, she realizes that her favorite picture book was a disguised magic book all along! In her excitement, she immediately starts testing out the various spells.
When a spell causes a disaster in her home, Qifrey rescues her just in time and decides to train her, realizing that she is the first lead he has found that could help him track down the Brimmed Caps—a dangerous group of witches who experiment with forbidden body-altering magic and spread magical artifacts among the commoners. But before Coco and Qifrey can confront the Brimmed Caps, she is going to have to improve her magical skills and learn to get along with Qifrey's other apprentices.

Monthly Releases[edit | edit source]
Prior to August 2022,[3] the individual chapters were published in the Monthly Morning Two magazine, which printed on the 22nd or so of each month. Since the magazine went fully digital, all new chapters are released on the Morning Two website, which for Witch Hat Atelier is posted on the fourth Thursday of each month.[4] Kodansha USA releases online English translations of these new monthly chapters the following Wednesday on their website/app K-MANGA.[5] Do note, the published English volumes receive brand-new translations compared to the K-MANGA releases.

This series has been translated into several languages, including: Chinese, Czech, English, French, German, Indonesian, Italian, Korean, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Spanish, Ukrainian, and Vietnamese.[6] Some of these publications also had Limited Editions with bonus items or alternative cover designs.

- December 08, 2017 - In the 2018 Kono Manga ga Sugoi! (This Manga is Amazing!) guidebook, Witch Hat Atelier was sixth place in the top 20 manga for male readers. [7]
- February 01, 2018 - Witch Hat Atelier made first place in the 13th "Recommended Comics Chosen by Nationwide Sales Clerks" (全国書店員が選んだおすすめコミック) award. [8]
- March 22, 2018 - Witch Hat Atelier made 7th place in the 11th Manga Taisho Awards, scoring 42 points. [9]
- April 05, 2018 - Witch Hat Atelier was nominated for Best General Manga in the 42nd Annual Kodansha Manga Awards. [10]
- January 03, 2019 - Witch Hat Atelier was nominated for the Best Youth Comic award in the French 46th Angoulême International Comics Festival. [11]
- January 04, 2020 - Witch Hat Atelier Manga Ranks in YALSA's Top 10 Graphic Novels for Teens [12]

The first volume of Witch Hat Atelier sold over 400,000 copies in a period from 1/23/2017-08/07/2017.[13] On September 13, 2018, Kamome Shirahama announced that the series had 1 million copies in print. [14] The fifth volume of the manga announced that the series had 1.4 million copies in print.
