Overview |
The illicit contraption seller (name unknown) is a witch who was caught selling illegal contraptions by the Knights Moralis.
Appearance[edit | edit source]
He has spiky hair, a coil-like pointed cap, and a cloak with extra fabric around the neck, possibly to cover his face with.
Personality[edit | edit source]
He has an abrasive demeanor and little respect for the privacy and feelings of others, especially women. This can be seen in how he created glasses that enable him to see through clothing.[1] He believes that any man would want to own a copy of his creation, failing to understand or care for the harm that his behavior causes.[2]
History[edit | edit source]
Nothing is known about his history.
Plot[edit | edit source]
Silver Night Festival Arc[edit | edit source]
Luluci and Utowin are informed of someone selling illicit contraptions which allow one to see through clothes. This enrages Luluci thanks to her past.[3] Ekoh and Etlan are seen chasing the man, who claims his actions aren't "forbidden". Etlan explains that spells can cause harm even if not cast directly on the victim. The man creates a cloud of smoke and escapes into the undercity, but Etlan already flicked lapess juice onto his cloak, allowing them to track him with a guidance orb. Luluci takes the vial of juice and chases after the man. He plans to destroy the seal on his contraption and feign innocence, but decides to use it one more time before he does. However, just then, Luluci arrives and captures him in her capture pennant, details his crimes of voyeurism and evading arrest, with the punishment of being stripped of his memories. The man attempts to argue this, stating that there are worse crimes more deserving of her time. While Luluci argues back, the man modifies his contraption, making it reduce cloth to dust rather than merely see through it. He uses it on her capture pennant and the outer layer of her uniform, but Luluci then bashes him in the head, destroying the glasses. Easthies arrives, and the man attempts to appeal to him as a fellow man, to no effect. As they are about to deliver his punishment, the man claims he has valuable on a man with a spell tattooed on his body.[4]
The man is next seen in a prison cell with Engendale as the Silver Eve Procession is starting. He wishes to escape from the cell while the guards are distracted, but he has no ink and the castle walls block the casting of spells. However, Engendale reveals that he posses a gemstone made of hardened Woodcruor and points out that the cell contains a window just large enough to fit his arms through.[5]
With an escape plan in mind, Engendale begins to draw a spell on the contraption seller's body. He doesn't understand the spell's composition, but knows that it is forbidden and will turn his body into slime, allowing him to slip out the window. Soon, the spell is completed, but as he is still inside Ezrest Castle, the magic won't take effect, not until he sticks his arm out the window. He hesitates, but Engendale pushes him over to the window, the man's arms then poking through to the outside of the castle, allowing the magic to take effect. Soon after, a Valance Leech, placed on the exterior of the castle to keep intruders out and prisoners in, latches onto the contraption seller and begins to feed on him. His liquified body then morphs monstrously, stretching and deforming as the leech consumes both him and the magic.
With the ink and blood within the leach reacting unpredictably and going haywire, the leech transforms into a towering, massive version of its former self, becoming a creature known as a Monster. This marks the beginning of its devastating assaulting the people of Ezrest.[6]
