Outsiders are the "normal" people of the world, the ones that are unaware of the true nature of magic and witches.[1]
Overview[edit | edit source]
Since of the Day of the Pact, Outsiders aren't allowed to know the truth of how magic is cast, and are led to believe that only those who are born as witches are able to use magic. Instead they are able to use Contraptions made by witches to enjoy the benefits of magic, though many contraptions are expensive for them to buy and are instead provided by their kingdom leaders. Outsiders are also the only people allowed to learn and practice medicine, as witches are forbidden to do so, although they are not aware of this enforced division.
Outsider communities are usually separate from Witch communities, even in areas where they both live nearby, such as Kalhn, where Witches live on the island while Outsiders live along the river bank.
Outsiders Who Became Witches[edit | edit source]
It is against the Pact rules to bring Outsiders into the Witch fold, but there have been a few exceptions:
- Coco is one, as she learned the truth of casting magic by secretly watching Qifrey redraw the seal on a Pegasus Carriage when he visited her village. Later she drew and traced spells from the picture book she bought as a young child from a Brimmed Cap at a castle festival, eventually resulting in a dangerous forbidden spell that petrified her mom and her house. Qifrey then took her in as an apprentice to locate this book and help her save her mom, as well as be a lead to finding that Brimmed Cap.
- It is later revealed that Qifrey was taken into Witch life as well, after he was found in the Forest of Thristas injured and with his memories erased after the Brimmed Caps experimented on him and left him for dead. Qifrey's earlier life and whether he was truly an Outsider before being taken in as Beldaruit's apprentice is not known.
- During the lead-up to Silver Eve, Custas and Dagda have a deadly encounter with bandits, which gravely injures Dagda. They are found by the Brimmed Cap Ininia and her master Restys and are saved by their forbidden magic. However when it proves to be a short-lived method in Dagda's case, they successfully recruit Custas into joining their ranks and becomes a Brimmed Cap himself.
