Chapter Sixty Three of the Witch Hat Atelier manga series.

Summary[edit | edit source]

Engendale, a former member of the Three Wise, enlists the help of his prison cellmate to escape from Ezrest Castle. Using a piece of hardened woodcruor mounted in his ring, Engendale marks the other man's body with various spells, as well as a number of glaives—protruding lines extending beyond a casting ring. This forbidden magic is unknown to the other witch, so Engendale explains that the glaives are an ancient technique intended to firmly embed his spell into the other's man's flesh, allowing his entire body to transform into a flexible slime capable of sliding through the prison bars with ease.

Despite closing the rings, the spell does not immediately activate due to the magic-blocking properties of the castle in which they are imprisoned. The other man begins to have second thoughts about their plan, but Engendale presses him to squeeze his arms through the barred window and beyond the magic-blocking walls in order to activate the spell. Unfortunately, at the moment the spell finally activates, a nearby valance leech latches onto the man, fusing the two together into a monstrous, tentacled lattice.

The monster quickly grows to enormous size, smashing through the walls of the castle before attacking a group of nearby dragons and their herders. Engendale reflects on the unexpected direction his escape plan has taken while donning a slime-brimmed cap.

The leech monster then turns its attention toward the city, as Coco and Custas look on in horror from the sky. Coco recalls her previous incident at the Staircase River, and worries whether she could have unintentionally cast something to produce the monster before her. In her moment of distraction, the leech monster moves to strike Coco, but is thwarted at the last second by Easthies and Qifrey.

Qifrey admonishes Coco for running off without regard for danger, and Easthies admonishes Qifrey for remaining in the way of battle, noting that the Knights Moralis do not need any outside help. Custas seems to have already disappeared, and as Qifrey turns to escape, Coco notices another tentacle aimed at Easthies. She attacks it without hesitation, using her new pen and one of her signature long, straight lines to cast a strong, burst of flame.

Finally, having noticed a similarity between the monster's tentacles and common forest leeches, Coco calls back to Easthies to suggest they attack it with salt and fire—just as Olruggio fortuitously arrives on scene.
