Engendale (エンゲンディル, Engendiru) is a former member of the Three Wise. He had the title of the "Wise in Friendship", and was responsible for negotiating foreign relations.
Appearance[edit | edit source]
An older man, he is bald with a thick, fluffy white beard. The lining of his cloak and the tip of his cap are lined with fur, which spills on the collar, where it shows rosette patterns. The hem of his cap is lined with geometrical decorations. He has thick eyebrows and a large, rounded nose.
Personality[edit | edit source]
Engendale is a powerful witch who abused his power as a Wise to allow for illegal activities, presumably out of corruption. While being arrested, he feigns confusion about the situation and lashes out at Lagrah, his former assistant, who outed his illegal practices and led to his arrest. After being being detained, Engendale was replaced by Lagrah as the Wise in Friendship.
During his fight with Qifrey on Silver Eve, a spell cast on his cap to block rainwater is instead covered with the gooey blood from the Valance Leech (Monster) transformation, creating the appearance of a Brimmed Cap. However when this is brought up, Engendale denies any connection to them or what they stand for. However this does not stop him from denouncing the Pointed Cap laws to not harm other witches, and indeed goes on to enjoy using magic to kill despite claiming not to.
Plot[edit | edit source]
Great Hall Arc[edit | edit source]
Engendale is mentioned by Lord Beldaruit, the Wise in Teachings, as the one 'boasting our relationships with nations above the sea'.[1]
Silver Eve Arc[edit | edit source]
It is revealed that as a result of supporting illegal activities, Engendale had been stripped of his post as the Wise of Friendship, replaced by Lagrah. He was then locked inside Ezrest Castle so he couldn't use magic and to be interrogated. The rest of the Three Wise and the Knights Moralis planned to wipe his memories once all the information they need was extracted. But before that could happen, he used Forbidden Magic on a fellow prisoner as a means to escape: drawing on the man's skin with ink concealed in one of his rings, and pushed him the window where he fused with a nearby Valance Leech and transformed into a Monster.[2]
SPOILER WARNING FOR CHAPTER 68
Later that night, Qifrey and Coco happened across his trail and were drawn into a magical fight with him. Coco was injured in an attack meant for Qifrey, who sheltered her in a sand dome and then walked out onto the ocean for their battle. Using forbidden spells drawn on his hands and in an accordion-style book, Engendale soon overpowered Qifrey and appeared to kill him with an impaling water spell. Walking back to shore, Engendale prepared to finish Coco off with a sword when the real Qifrey emerged from behind the sand dome with the real Coco beside him, and used a spell combined with the Lockwax Scroll given to him by Easthies earlier, Qifrey successfully trapped Engendale in a sphere of water, setting off all of his spells and subduing him.[3] Afterwards, Qifrey brought the unconscious man back to the castle to be imprisoned once more.[4]
End of spoiler.
