A Valance Leech is a type of lattice-shaped leech. They are named after window hangings.

Description[edit | edit source]

Valance leeches are made up of many sticky tentacles[1] in a lattice or net-like shape.[2] Each tentacle seems to possess a mouth with multiple rows of sharp teeth.[3] They use their tentacles to grab prey and to feed on blood. After feeding, valance leeches are known to swell in size.[2] at its natural size, this blood sucking is rarely fatal.[4] The saliva of the valance leech contains a toxin which stops wounds from scabbing over leading them to continuously bleed. This toxin also has a numbing effect.[5][6] If food becomes less available, valance leeches are known to become more aggressive.[7]

Like other kinds of leeches, those of the valance variety are vulnerable to both salt and fire.[8]

History[edit | edit source]

Some castles, including Ezrest, keep valance leeches along their outer walls. True to their name, the leeches hang down from windows and other openings, like a valance, preventing both incursions and escape.[1]

While Engendale was in prison, he drew forbidden magic on his cellmate's body and told him to reach his hand out of the window so they could escape. When the cellmate did so, a valance leech began attacking him. As the forbidden spell activated, it fused the leech and human cellmate together.[9] The resulting monster—born of conjuring ink and blood—exploded in size before setting its sight on the nearby town.[10][11]

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • While the valance leech's Japanese name, 帳蛭 (tobari hiru), literally translates as "curtain" (tobari) and "leech" (hiru), the component character 帳 also carries the additional meaning of "notebook," like in 手帳 (techou).
  • The K-MANGA official online English translation called this creature a curtain leech.
