Parasol Jellies are a jellyfish-like creature found in the ocean near the Great Hall.
Description[edit | edit source]
Parasol Jellies are shaped like a parasol, hence the name, with a singular crab-like leg. They are known to live in large schools near the Great Hall.
If the leg is pulled off while the Jelly is fresh, the top of the Parasol Jelly will leak a mild acid that can irritate skin.[1] In order to safely remove the leg for cooking, the Jelly must first be dissolved in a pot over heat.[1]
The only edible part of the Parasol Jelly is the leg. The meat is enclosed in a hard outer shell and so must be extracted, but the meat is described as soft, fluffy and delicious.[2] However because of the small amount of meat in each Jelly's leg, and the required effort to process enough Jellies to make a worthwhile meal out of it, most people do not bother eating this creature.[2] In addition, the cleanup is also very involved, because boiling down the Jellies leaves a briny broth full of acid. While magic can be used to neutralize the acid, the salt content cannot be, and the remaining broth must be dumped in the sea.[3]
History[edit | edit source]
Schools of Parasol Jellies sometimes drift too close to the Great Hall so witches are tasked with driving them away. If they fail to, the Jellies may fall through the mist basin and become a problem.[4] Parasol Jellies are first seen in Witch Hat Atelier Kitchen when Qifrey uses water magic to drive a school away, but leaves enough behind so that he can take them home for dinner.[5]
