Eldroxen are an ox-like creature native to the Zozah Peninsula.

Description[edit | edit source]

Eldroxen are a very gentle, domesticated type of oxen that have long hair over their entire body. Also have a pair of long horns that twist at the end, long ears, and a long Tapir-like snout. Eyes (if they have) are hidden behind a curtain of hair over either side of their face, while the body has four legs with cloven hooves. The Eldroxen can grow to be quite large, and much taller than an adult human.[1]

There also appears to be a smaller variety; with horns that twist more, have a lighter fur color, thinner legs, and cloven toes that spread out more. This variety has been shown twice as an illustration,[2] including being pictured alongside a flank of its meat.[3]

During Silver Eve, the stockier Eldroxen are used in the Silver Eve Procession to pull the Circular Floatforms along the procession route for Witches to use to demonstrate their newest contraptions. Although there is magic happening above them and crowds of Outsiders cheering loudly alongside them, the Eldroxen seem quite unbothered.[1]

History[edit | edit source]

Eldroxen were introduced when members of Qifrey's Atelier watched the Silver Eve Procession at Ezrest, and were doing their job of pulling the floating platforms.[1] Later when Coco and Agott are on a circular floatform demonstrating Coco's new contraption, they are flung off the edge by the Eldroxen suddenly stopping.[4] Having sensed the emergence of the Valance Leech (Monster), the Eldroxen grew quite agitated—pulling away from their handlers and then huddling together in fear.[5] Qifrey notes that this is the first time he has ever seen the Eldroxen behave this way.[5]

Former Wise in Friendship Engendale later tells of how the Eldroxen and some other species like the Pegasus and Frillrams were actually created by witches using magic to fuse animals together in the era before the Day of the Pact. Considered a great success, these fused creatures were tamed and bred into abundance while their unnatural beginnings were pushed from mind. This practice ended when such magic became forbidden.[2]

In Witch Hat Atelier Kitchen, Eldroxen make their debut in Chapter 51 as the main dish. Notably, the Eldroxen pictured resembles the variety/breed as mentioned by Engendale in the main series' Chapter 68.

Notes[edit | edit source]

  • An Eldroxen was first seen in the background during the Golden Eve Procession, with Prince Eoleo Ezrest and his two retainers riding in a box-seat set upon the creature.[6]
  • The "Eld" in Eldroxen (and 翁 in Japanese) is for elder/venerable old man.
