Giltroot is a type of plant whose roots are used as a spice in cooking.

Description[edit | edit source]

Giltroot is a plant that produces thick, edible roots or rhizomes that are slightly bitter and impart a yellow hue.[1] They are ground up into a powder and used in cooking.[2]

Giltroot is considered exotic by Kalhn standards.[3] It cannot be found at ordinary markets, and so must be specially ordered.[3] Because of the difficulty in procuring this ingredient along with the other spices,[2] it's possible Giltroot does not actually grow in Zozah but is imported from another nation. (While cooking Four Spice Soup which uses ground Giltroot and other spices, Qifrey mentions that "in the recipe's land of origin, chefs experiment with a greater number of spices."[1])

History[edit | edit source]

Giltroot was introduced in Chapter 37 (Witch Hat Atelier Kitchen) when Qifrey picked up this and other spices from The Starry Sword that were specially ordered for him. Although it wasn't used in a recipe until the following chapter, where he used in his Four Spice Soup for himself and Olruggio.[4] Qifrey later used those four spices again as part of his egg mixture in deep-frying fuzzbergine slices in his Spicy Salad with Fried Fuzzbergines meal.[5]

Notes[edit | edit source]

  • For real-world recipes, Ground Giltroot can be substituted with turmeric.[6]
  • In Volume 5's Substitutions and Suggestions list, Zestgrass and Giltroot are mistakenly mixed-up, switching Zestgrass Seeds' coriander with Ground Giltroot's turmeric.[7]
