Thaumaterbe is a type of flowering plant whose nuts are used as a spice in cooking.
Description[edit | edit source]
Thaumaterbe is a thick-stemmed plant with long-bladed leaves that grow in bunches of three to a stem, and light-colored flowers that grow in a corymb structure.[1] The nuts are dark-colored, flat, thin, and slightly long, and have a unique, striking aroma.[2] It is described by some as warm and earthy. It was once used as incense by soothsayers to provide ambience during important rituals.[1]
Thaumaterbe Nuts are used as a spice in cooking, and is considered exotic by Kalhn standards.[3] It cannot be found at ordinary markets, and so must be specially ordered.[3] Because of the difficulty in procuring this ingredient among other spices,[4] it's possible Thaumaterbe does not actually grow in Zozah but is imported from another nation. (While cooking a Four Spice Soup which uses Thaumaterbe nuts and other spices, Qifrey mentions that "in the recipe's land of origin, chefs experiment with a greater number of spices."[2])
History[edit | edit source]
Thaumaterbe was introduced in Chapter 37 (Witch Hat Atelier Kitchen) when Qifrey picked up this and other spices from The Starry Sword that was specially ordered for him. He used it in his Pointed Cap Fritters with Badland Beans recipe he made with Tartah and the girls, and later used it in his Four Spice Soup for himself and Olruggio.[5] Qifrey then used those four spices again as part of his egg mixture in deep-frying fuzzbergine slices in his Spicy Salad with Fried Fuzzbergines meal.[6]
