Wood Sorrel is a type of plant with edible flowers that can be found growing wild in the Naakiwan Downs.[1]

Description[edit | edit source]

Wood Sorrel is a small plant with leaves that have several margins along the leaf blade, a thin stem with tiny flowers that have six petals that alternate in white and pale purple colors,[2] and three-to-four dark-colored stamens in the flower's center. The plant tends to sprout near cemeteries and other burial sites,[3] and can be found in the Naakiwan Downs near Qifrey's Atelier.[1] (...intended or unintended relation between these two things is currently unknown.)

The flowers can be pressed into Marktea slips, and because of their known growing spots, makes it the preferred tea for some people to drink when thinking of loved ones who have passed.[3] The tea is also said to be effective in treating melancholy.[3] When brewed, the tea produces a golden color.[4]

History[edit | edit source]

Wood Sorrel is first mentioned in Chapter 1 when the women from the Pegasus Carriage are shopping for fabrics in Coco's family shop. "Wood Sorrel embroidery" is questioned if it is still in fashion by one lady before the other responds that it's nice and makes you look proper and intelligent, even.[5]

Wood Sorrel made its visual debut in Witch Hat Atelier Kitchen when Qifrey introduced Marktea to Coco,[6] and has been seen rarely since as an ingredient in Olruggio's homemade fruit liqueur,[7] as edible flowers eaten raw, and added as decoration in candy cookies.[1]

Because many of the Marktea herbs are also used as casting components,[8] it's possible that Wood Sorrel is also used to make ink dyes.

Notes[edit | edit source]

  • "Wood Sorrel" is the name of a real-life plant, though it has zero resemblance to the Kitchen version in either flower or leaf design. In Japanese, the Kitchen flower is named Okizarisou, which roughly translates to 'left behind grass,' which fits well with its habit of sprouting near burial sites. Why the English translation decided to call it "wood sorrel" is a mystery.
