Starspice is a type of chili pepper that can be used in cooking.

Description[edit | edit source]

Starspice is a type of chili pepper that are some inches in length and have a star-shaped calyx and a pedicel at the top. They are quite spicy and lend any dish a fiery kick.[1]

Starspice is considered exotic by Kalhn standards.[2] It cannot be found at ordinary markets, and so must be specially ordered.[2] Because of the difficulty in procuring this and other spices,[3] it's possible Starspice does not actually grow in Zozah but is imported from another nation. (While cooking Four Spice Soup which uses Starspice and other spices, Qifrey mentions that "in the recipe's land of origin, chefs experiment with a greater number of spices."[1])

Starspice is also the progenitor of the Star Pepper,[4] which is confirmed to be native to a nation outside of the Zozah Peninsula and had to be specially ordered by local merchants,[5] giving more credence to the Starspice most likely being imported too.

History[edit | edit source]

Starspice was introduced in Chapter 37 (Witch Hat Atelier Kitchen) when Qifrey picked up this and other spices from The Starry Sword that were specially ordered for him. He later used it in Chapter 38 for his Four Spice Soup that he made for himself and Olruggio. While it was perfectly spicy enough for Qifrey, it was a bit too much for Olruggio, though he continued to eat it.[6] Sometime later, Qifrey used those four spices again (to a lesser degree) as part of his egg mixture in deep-frying fuzzbergine slices for his Spicy Salad with Fried Fuzzbergines meal he made for Olruggio.[7]

Notes[edit | edit source]

  • For real-world recipes, Starspice can be substituted with cayenne pepper [12]
