Summary[edit]
Coco asks Qifrey what's wrong with Custas and if something is happening to him. Before he can answer, however, she grabs his arm and leads him away. She lies to Olruggio that they're just going to the Medical Spire so they can get a new bandage for her eye. Olruggio objects but before he can stop them, he is overcrowded by witch fans of his. Agott observes the commotion and notes that something is off with the pair but she doesn't know what. She hopes that they'll be okay.
On their way to Custas, Qifrey expresses surprise at Coco learning to become such a good liar. Coco says that she learned it from him. Qifrey starts saying he's not a liar but Coco finishes his sentence with that he just keeps the truth to himself. Coco stops them middair and asks Qifrey to tell her everything he knows about what's happening to Custas and that she wants the truth. Qifrey agrees as he recognises that she has already experienced the despair that magic can bring.
At the Medical Spire, Dagda is sitting on the floor with Custas sleeping on his lap while Luluci watches over them. Sinocia approaches them and asks if Custas is okay. Dagda reassures her that he didn't get any injuries from the leech. Sinocia walks off but thanks them as witches for all their serivce. Dagda is confused momentarily before realising that Custas' hat is beside them. Dagda expresses disdain at how everyone is being nice to them because of the hat despite nothing about them actually changing. He compares this lack of reasoning for trusting or doubting them to there being no reasoning behind who can and can't learn magic, revealing to Luluci that he knows witches are chosen not born. He confirms her suspicion that Custas told him along with other witch secrets and that he had first struggled to believe that the seal on his chest was the only thing keeping him alive. Dagda tells Luluci that she doesn't need to bother erasing his memory as it won't be around for long anyway but begs her to take Custas in as a witch and teach him magic. He argues that Custas only wanted to help him and that he would only use the ability for good.
Custas wakes up and asks if Dagda just called him his son. He says yes and tells him to rest. This causes Custas to feel happy and at ease and he begins to transform to the horror of Dagda.
Qifrey is explaining to Coco how he noticed that Custas' eyes had lost their vibrance since he first saw him at the Staircase River and that his wooden legs looked too alive. He took these as signs that the wood was made of a Silverwood tree. He explains that the tree will only take root in places that are calming, people included so if a Silverwood tree is attatched to a person and that person feels at peace, the tree will take over their body and grow while feeding on their hope.
