Chapter Sixty Four of the Witch Hat Atelier manga series.
Summary[edit | edit source]
Jujy and Hiehart are down in the Ezrest sewers, attending to a favor for Agott.
After Coco's demonstration for the Silver Eve Procession—a purifying water jug—received a rather underwhelming reception.[3] Agott quickly jumped to Coco's aid, adding a seal to the contraption which made the purified water leap into the air in the form of flying fish. The lifelike water scultures then flew into the nearby sewer grates, dazzling the crowd.[4]
Back down in the sewer, Jujy uses a separate guidance spell prepared by Agott to help direct the water fish to their ultimate destination. Jujy expresses admiration for Coco and Agott's creativity, while Hiehart expresses his own admiration—for Jujy's reliability. Yet, Jujy still finds herself wishing she possesed the kind of confidence her friends seem to have, just before noticing a strange movement in the water...
Up above ground, a giant, many-tentacled monster is attacking the town. While the Knights Moralis attempt to fight back the monster, Nolnoa, Tetia, Richeh, and Agott help guide some of the crowd away from danger. After barracading themselves in a building, Nolnoa is alarmed to find his grandson Tartah is missing. Before the small group has a chance to really panic, Luluci arrives carrying the injured boy, and a few nearby Outsiders offer their medical help.
Suddenly, a tentacle bursts through one of their barricades, and Dagda, who has been sheltering with the others, strikes out with his sword before Luluci has a chance to react. Luluci recognizes the man from the Staircase River disaster, and as a potential lead in her ongoing investigation. Tartah then calls out to Dagda, telling him he spotted Custas outside near the monster, thus prompting Dagda to frantically rush back out in search of his adopted son. At first, Luluci hestitates to follow, but Agott and the other girls are able to reassure her, insisting they are capable of defending the shelter by themselves until more help arrives.
While others remain puzzled as to the nature of the attacking monster, King Deanreldy Ezrest is able to easily surmise it's some kind of valance leech based on the way its victims medically present: with wounds that cannot be stanched, yet no apparent pain. Together with that knowledge, the King arms himself with torch and sword, and rushes forth to aid his city. Frustrated, Beldaruit transforms his sealchair into an upright, attack formation, and chases after the hot-headed ruler.
Lagrah remains behind with the other royals in Ezrest Castle, and Queen Zayamaiya explains that her husband is likely headed to the town's western spire, where they maintain a blood bank, in order to perform blood transfusions for victims of the monster leech. Prince Eoleo asks whether windowways can be used to aid in evacuation and transport efforts. Lagrah reluctantly admits that the windowways function in pairs, while privately unsettled by the keen perceptiveness displayed by both Deanreldy and his son regarding the function of magic. If windowways are to be utilized, both sides of the portal must be cleared—something Utowin is already fighting towards...
