Chapter Sixty Seven of the Witch Hat Atelier manga series.
Summary[edit | edit source]
Coco grabs the leftover fabric from the Wingcloak from her bag. In the distance, Qifrey is using magic to make snow as the Valance Leech is unsuited for cold weather thus slowing it down. Upon hearing the ocean, Coco gets the idea to use seawater as in her village they used salt to remove leaf-fall leeches. Qifrey agrees to the plan and carries her as they fly to the shore. As they pass the castle, Coco feels that something is off.
Agott, Tetia, and Richeh are helping the injured. Agott made note of the spell Coco used for her purification pot earlier so they are able to make clean water. A woman there explains to Tetia that leeches have a toxin in them that stops wounds from clotting causing people to bleed. She explains her technique of squeezing the toxin out before rinsing and wrapping it. She offers to show Tetia what herbs to use and how to wrap bandages but Tetia explains that there's a rule against witches learning medicine and that she's not sure if its okay to learn about those things. The woman says that she isn't a doctor and asks what the harm is in knowing a bit of information to help people and that anyone who wants to restrict her learning is only trying to control her.
People call for Tetia to help with the water but she's distracted. Agott asks if she's going to to help her and Tetia asks if they should show them how to purify water themselves. Agott is shocked and whispers to her not to and that it's against the principles. Tetia continues, about to say that people and witches should be more something when Ekoh and Etlan walk in with a Windowway to a medical spire. They help escort people through and Agott is about to follow when one of them stops her and says that since they're not injured they'll have to go to the evacuation site instead. Tetia objects saying that they could help at the spire. The two are suspicious about how a witch could assist a doctor and Agott and Richeh have to come to her rescue and say that she meant indirectly by purifying water and making bandages. This answer satisfies them but they say that the spire already has plenty of contraptions and they'd rather a grownup instead of an apprentice anyway. Agott says that they are just scared and aren't thinking straight but Tetia tries to object again and is shushed. Ekoh and Etlan tell her to drop it.
At the evacuation site, Agott is chastising Tetia for being so careless. She says that it isn't like she hasn't had similar thoughts but that they need to be smart about it; that if the Knights catch on Coco will be put in danger. She looks over the city and wishes that Qifrey, Coco, and Olruggio are safe.
Qifrey is successfully using magic to throw ocean water at the leech and drive it back. He notices the remains of a wyrmheder's camp and wonders if drinking dragon blood caused it to grow so big. Coco explains what's been bothering her: that if the leeches got close enough to attack the dragons, why wouldn't it try to get inside the castle. Qifrey spots the hole in the side of the tower and realizes that the only thing that could've kept it out is if the leech was made by magic.
Coco jumps in front of Qifrey as a projectile is thrown at him and is hit in the head. Engendale stands in the ocean.
