Chapter Fourteen of the third volume of the Witch Hat Atelier manga series.
Summary[edit | edit source]
While Mr. Nolnoa welcomes new clients to the Starry Sword, Tartah wonders how is it possible that his grandfather didn't see the burst of light from earlier. The boy begins to suspect Qifrey might have had something to do with it.
At the atelier, Coco is practicing the Grasping Wind spell to pluck out a Mountain Apple from a tree, but she drew the spell too large and uprooted the entire tree instead. Tetia suggests drawing the signs at an angle to make the air twist. Agott arrives, performs the spell and manages to successfully pluck out the mountain apple without harming the tree. She tells Coco and Tetia that, if they are aware of their weaknesses, they should spend more time practicing. Tetia compliments Agott and asks her to teach Coco and herself how to practice.
Later, as they eat the apples they picked, Coco asks if there are more tests other than the Consent of the Crown. Richeh tells her there are five tests in total. Qifrey adds that the Three Wise decided to make the tests adventures in the outside world. After passing the fourth test, a witch graduates from their master's care, and after passing the fifth test they are qualified to take apprentices themselves.
Tetia wants to travel far to hear people say thanks in every language in the world. Richeh expresses her dislike towards tests: she doesn't want to be told what to draw. Agott tells her that if she doesn't challenge herself she will always stay as she is, but Richeh counters by saying she is fine staying as she is and leaves. After that, Agott says there are many things she wants to do but can't yet, which is why she wants to pass all the tests as soon as possible. She wishes to one day become a librarian at the Tower of Tomes. Tetia tells Coco that Agott was born into the Arklaum family, a lineage of witches that can be traced back to one of the apprentices of the Three Wise. Coco, on her part, doesn't think so much about the future, because knows exactly what she has to do.
At night, Coco has a nightmare about her mother, who blames her for turning her into stone due to her wish to use magic. Both Agott and the Brimmed Caps tell her what happened to her mother is her fault, as well. Coco wakes from her nightmare shaking and hugs Brushbuddy. Meanwhile, Qifrey is still awake and preparing a few materials, hiding it when Agott approaches. He tells her not to push herself too hard and to go to bed. As Agott passes by her and Coco's study room, she sees Coco at her desk, awake and studying because she can't go back to sleep. Coco wonders how much more she has to learn before she can save her mother.
Qifrey is now alone in one of the higher rooms of the atelier. He uses a spell to manipulate the stone of the walls and block the door to the room. He pulls out Coco's inkpot and says that, after waiting so long, the day has finally arrived.
