Chapter Thirty-Five of the sixth volume of the Witch Hat Atelier manga series.

Summary[edit | edit source]

Coco’s guiding orb leads her to a large gate with many door-knobs. She remembers Beldaruit’s words about following the smoke, and notices one of the door-knobs has an engraving that resembles smoke. She turns the knob and opens the gate, entering Beldaruit’s chambers. The Wise in Teachings apologises for making her come all the way to his room, but he wanted to talk to her.

Beldaruit invites Coco to some tea. As the girl holds the cup, Beldaruit pours the tea, and the drink adopts the shape of a small dragon curled up within the cup. The Wise in Teachings calls it a Palm Dragon Teacup, a contraption which is achieved by combining the sigil in the saucer with the magic circle on the base of the cup. Coco is amused by the contraption, and Beldaruit returns the compliment by saying her performance in the exam was equally lovely. He admits that he was overcome with excitement every time he saw one of their spells in action. Both Coco and him seem to share their fondness for magic.

There’s a wooden desk hanging above Beldaruit’s bed, and he lowers it to draw a spell. A flock of small illusory dragons made of smoke flies around Coco. Beldaruit tells her that those who love magic thirst for knowledge, and those who thirst for knowledge are in turn rewarded by their spells. Since Coco knew nothing about magic until recently, she should understand that relationship very well.

Coco is taken aback by the combination of the Wise’s words and the aggressive illusory dragons. Beldaruit apologises and tells the young witch that they have a mutual acquaintance. The witch who created the Palm Dragon Teacup was once the Wise in Teachings’ first apprentice, aswell as Coco’s own master: Qifrey. Due to his position as Wise in Teachings, it is his responsibility to ensure that all children can study magic in safety. For this reason, he wants Coco to become his apprentice. Under his protection, Coco would be safe from the knights moralis, the brimcaps and from Qifrey. Coco wonders to herself why should she be protected from Qifrey.

Coincidentally, Qifrey wakes up in the medical spire and wonders where is Coco.
