Chapter Forty Three of the eighth volume of the Witch Hat Atelier manga series.
Summary[edit | edit source]
In a flashback, a group of contraption thieves cornered Custas and as a result of trying to run away, his sealchair broke. One of them goes to hit Custas when Tartah appears and tricks them by calling out for a witch that isn't there. The group runs away and Tartah helps glue his chair back together. The two introduce themselves.
Presently, Olruggio offers to take over the housework so Qifrey can rest his arm as a way to distract himself from his latest spell. Coco inquires into the spell and Olruggio shows off his Phantasmal Fireball. Olruggio explains that its faux fire that cannot harm anyone and Qifrey explains thats its a failed contraption and dangerous because of this. The group has a discussion about how witches have a responsibility to think of how their spells could impact others and society as a whole.
Even more presently, Tetia gets Coco to zone back in as she was spacing out. Nolnoa tells her not to worry and mentions how Tartah doesn't open up to him. Nolnoa asks Coco to go get Tartah to join them for cake. Coco finds him studying with Custas in the storeroom and starts talking with them. The topic switches to how Custas and Dagda are travelling musicians so he doesn't get to see the same people often. Upon learning this, Coco asks to hear music but Custas says their instruments were swept away in the river and they can't afford new ones in addition to his hospital care costing a lot. Custas clarifies that Dagda isn't his dad but he still considers him family as he took him in when he was living on the streets.
Custas explains that the reason why he wants to learn about herbs is to find out which ones are valuable so he can make things easier for Dagda. He anguishes over how he doesn't get the opportunity to learn basics such as reading to improve his skills as he needs money now and doesn't have the same future or opportunity witches have (shelter, money, food). Custas leaves and Coco and Tartah leave after. The pair see him talking to Dagda about how he's been taking on mercenary jobs to make ends meet. Custas wants him to stop as its dangerous, and tells him to just leave him. Tartah notes how difficult it is to navigate the world with a sealchair similiar to how his silverwash makes identifying poison difficult. The two resolve to help change the world around them to suit Custas if they can't change him to suit the world.
