Chapter Ten of the second volume of the Witch Hat Atelier manga series.

Summary[edit | edit source]

After Agott asks Qifrey to take her with him to help rescue Dagda's son, Custas, from the river, Qifrey protests, but Agott is insistent. Olruggio says that he will go to the scene and set up a magic portal so Qifrey can prepare, saying that he will take Agott with him. Qifrey voices his concerns to his friend, telling Olruggio that he is worried that Agott is rushing herself to grow up.

On horseback, Agott and Olruggio follow Dagda to the river. They arrive at the river, where several outsiders are waiting. Orluggio hands Agott the drying Link Rings, telling her to use them to dry off people's clothes. When Agott protests, saying that she can do more, Olruggio says that Qifrey's fears were justified and that Agott is far too impatient. He reminds her to think about what the purpose of magic is for.

Olruggio finishes setting up the Windowway, and Qifrey steps out from it, followed by Tetia, then Coco, and then Richeh (implied). Qifrey jumps down to the river below and uses his sword, the Raincleaver which is covered in tiny, connected water repelling spells (probably dispel water), to split the water apart, while Olruggio jumps down to the carriage that had fallen into the river and rescues three people including Custas, bringing them back up to the cliffside where he reunites with Dagda.

Olruggio says he's going to check the river upstream to make sure it's safe and takes Richeh with him, while Qifrey responds that he will go check downstream to asses the damage and takes Tetia with him. They leave the Outsiders by the river to Coco and Agott.

As they help tend to the people's injuries, Custas uses a rope and climbs back down to the river to try recover the goods from the carriage. Dagda tries to stop him, but Custas doesn't listen. He climbs down the cliff and reaches the riverbank, but then suddenly there's a landslide. After the shock, Agott realizes that Coco fell in the landslide too, and sees her hanging onto a boulder, half in the water. Agott yells, asking if Coco is alright. Coco responds, saying that she is alright, but that Custas is trapped under a boulder.

Dagda asks Agott to help as she is a witch, pleading her to do whatever it takes to save his son. Agott recognizes that this is an emergency, and that without her Sylph Shoes, she can't go and get Qifrey or Olruggio. She has a dark moment, thinking this is her chance to prove that someone wrong, only for the outsiders' comments about her magic making her recall the hurtful comments onlookers gave when she was younger. Coco then yells to Agott, asking if there is anything she can do. Snapping Agott out of the memory, she tells Coco to fill her in on the conditions below.

Coco explains that due to the landslide, the flow of the water is slowed, so they don't have to worry about being washed away, but the water is also rising, so they have limited time. The riverbanks are too muddy to climb, and the boulder is too heavy to move, even for an adult. Agott asks her if her magic supplies are alright, to which she pulls them out, showing that they are now soaked.

Agott realizes that Coco can't do anything due to her being unable to move and her supplies being ruined, and that as the adult witches aren't here, she is the only one able to cast magic. But she can't allow the outsiders to see her cast, and she is left at a loss for what to do.

Meanwhile, at the Great Hall, a report reaches Easthies that a giant column of water was spotted upstream of the Marshwoods, and he tells his subordinates that they will head there.
