Chapter Eighty of the Witch Hat Atelier manga series.
Summary[edit | edit source]
Utowin, Ekoh, and Etlan return to the hospital to find it damaged and Captain Vinanna unconscious on the floor. Utowin is shocked Easthies did this, and Etlan recalls when Easthies rushed off to talk with Vinanna and how his behavior had changed. Etlan also realizes that Vinanna's staff is missing. The scene changes to Easthies, further in the hospital and now wielding two staffs with an advanced version of the Sinsinger's Talon spell, as he uses them to ensnare the witches in his vicinity and erase their memories. More information is given on the nature of the Knights' staff and how the pennant can incorporate different kinds of magic. The fleeing witches worry that they'll be sent to Adanlee Island—where witches go when all of their memories of magic are erased—but Easthies tells them to be at peace because he's not erasing all of their memories. He goes on to explain that there are three types of memory erasure spells: spells that target magic, spells that target a specific person, and spells that target a certain period of time, and that he is using the third spell. As Easthies moves on, Coco is seen hiding along the wall outside of the window. She makes her way to the roof, wondering about what she should do and how to reach Beldaruit.
As she loses her ability to stand, she assures Brushbuddy that she's fine even though things are scary. She reflects on how she doesn't want to lose her memories and how she can't return home. She tells herself to be strong, and then thinks of Agott, Tetia, and Richeh and how each of them would encourage her to persevere. And then Qifrey, who points to her pointed cap. She reflects on the lessons he taught her, and imagines all of the people in her heart supporting her, and how she's not alone even if they're not physically with her. With renewed strength, she thinks about how she can stop Easthies. Following Brushbuddy's enthusiastic lead toward some rubble, she hears a voice.
Meanwhile inside the hospital, Luluci and the other survivors that were saved by Custas' magic wait in the room beside the door that leads to the clockwork healing table. Hiehart hears the noise (from Easthies' attack) upstairs, and wants to check it out by Jujy warns him he's not allowed, and that they still need treatment. He's upset by the situation, as well as being saved, worried that that the Knights will look upon him the way they will at Custas. He stands by the door, asking if he's going to be protected or punished, when Easthies walks into the room. The Sinsinger Talons make quick work of Heihart and several of the other Outsiders as Luluci shouts at him for why he's doing this, as these people need help and are not the enemy. Easthies in turn throws the question back at her, as the medical door and the people are using Forbidden Magic, and as a member of the Knights Moralis, she should be on his side. Luluci reflects on how she once thought this way too, but has since changed, and tries to reason with Easthies to calm down as she edges toward her staff which leans against the wall. Easthies instead attacks her with the Sinsinger Talons, which she blocks at the last moment with her staff. Upset about being told to calm down, talking of how the others have not been calm and even the Three Wise have misjudged things, Easthies is about to attack again when Coco and Tartah spill a large bottle of Spectre-Smoke Tree pollen onto him from the upper floor and use a wind spell to keep it surrounding him. Tartah shouts out to Luluci and the others below to not inhale it, as the pollen is an ingredient in sleeping pills. As the smoke clears, Easthies is revealed to be on the ground asleep, which Luluci comments might be a few days before he wakes. Tartah and Dagda catch up as nurses rush in to help the injured, and Luluci and Dagda talk too. Luluci reflects on Easthies' expression as he attacked her, and believes from the bottom of her heart that she was doing the right thing to protect these people, and that she couldn't see the person she knew in his face. That he looked scared, and wondered what he was carrying.
Elsewhere, Utowin carried Vinanna to join the other lined-up witches who had been attacked by Easthies, as Beldaruit and Riliphin convened with Lagrah. Because of Easthies' rampage, the number of witches to help in the plan against the leech has dropped significantly. Qifrey's location is briefly wondered at, but Lagrah's suggestion to go look for him is denied as they can't afford to lose the help of any more witches. The Valance Leech (Monster) has been shrinking due to the lack of blood available in the city. Coco, who has joined them, mentions how she too has noticed because the bright starlight has begun to reach into the city again. Beldaruit warns they must hurry though, because it means the leech is moving towards the hillside where the people have evacuated, so it can resume feeding on them.
The scene changes to Richeh, Tetia, and Agott as they see the leech approaching and realize this. Suddenly joined by Coco, Tetia panics about Coco's facial scar and asks if she's okay. Assuring that she's fine, Coco is then hugged by Agott and they have a moment. Richeh asks where Qifrey is, and Coco says they had split ways and then pulls out her split-shard ring. Because it is glowing, she thinks Qifrey is making his way towards them. With Beldaruit leading the charge, the time to activate the massive Counterclock has come, as the leech continues its climb up the hill.

Chapter Notes[edit | edit source]
- The Spectre-Smoke Tree pollen that Coco and Tartah use to put Easthies to sleep is the same plant mentioned by Qifrey in Chapter 40. The K-Manga English translation for the monthly chapter releases calls it the "Phantom-Fume" tree.
- This is the second-longest chapter in Witch Hat Atelier manga history (thus far) at 44 pages, with the longest chapter being Chapter 1 at 62 pages. Because this chapter's publication was delayed by a month, that may have helped lengthen the page count.
- The Morning Two magazine chapter cover features a unique phrase that's not included in the volume releases. It reads: 不穏が空を覆い尽くす and can be translated as: Unease fills the air.
