Chapter Thirteen of the third volume of the Witch Hat Atelier manga series.
Summary[edit | edit source]
Qifrey confirms with Coco that she got her ink from Mr. Nolnoa. Coco asks if anything is wrong with the ink. Qifrey asks Olruggio to take the girls back to the Atelier for him. When Olruggio asks where he is planning to go to, Qifrey says that he wasn't able to buy Coco a wand the other day and now would be a good chance to.
The two of them arrive at The Starry Sword but it's closed, indicated by a missing door. Tartah shows up and lets them in. Coco introduces herself to Tartah and he offers to apply some Tranquileaf to her scratch. Coco is wondered by all the magic dyes and Tartah tells her to not take them out of their specific order.
Meanwhile, Qifrey and Mr. Nolnoa are talking about how Mr. Nolnoa was unable to isolate the dyes from the cobblestone as it melts away to nothing. Qifrey asks Mr. Nolnoa to look at the ink he thought was suspicious. The ink is described as having a slight tinge of blue. Mr. Nolnoa confirms that it is one of his ink pots. Qifrey suspects that during the dragon attack the Brimmed Caps cast a spell on the inkpot. Qifrey, against Mr. Nolnoa's advice, tries drawing with the ink.
Coco asks Tartah about what is in each jar by describing the colour of each dye and Tartah shows her a catalog of different dyes. Coco expresses her desire to live in a stationer's shop but Tartah disagrees and says that living at an atelier would be way better. This confuses Coco and she asks for clarification on whether or not he's an apprentice. Tartah changes the subject before answering. He asks Coco to hand back the catalog but she gets distracted and asks about the name of another powder. Tartah is unable to identify which one she is referring to and gets frustrated. An explosion of light occurs in another room which causes all the jars to fall off their shelves and their labels to fall off.
Coco says that she can help him put the jars back but realizes that the catalog only shows a picture of the original ingredient but Tartah should be able to identify them by colour. This causes Tartah to lash out and say that he can't and had memorized them according to their shelf order and he can't tell the colours apart. He leaves Coco in her confusion by apologizing and saying that his Grandpa can sort them out and she can go home. Tartah explains how everyone has things they are and aren't capable of and says he will never be a witch due to his Silverwash.
Qifrey is shown to be injured by the explosion he caused even though the light seal he drew was tiny. He figures out that it was twinned bottle spell and there must be a seal inside the bottle. He realizes that he finally has the lead he has been waiting for to the Brimmed Caps. Mr. Nolnoa says that this sort of magic doesn't belong in this world and that they need to go the Great Hall. Qifrey objects to this and says they can't tell anyone. Qifrey apologizes for what he is about to do.
Outside, Qifrey explains to Coco that the inkpot was given to her by accident and gives her a Witch's Belt to make up for it. Coco asks for an explanation on what Silverwash is. He explains it to be a birth condition where the affected can only see the world in silver.
Tartah asks his Grandpa what the light spell was but Mr. Nolnoa doesn't know anything about it.
