Chapter Thirty-Three of the sixth volume of the Witch Hat Atelier manga series.
Summary[edit | edit source]
Coco wakes up at the medical spire and thanks Sinocia for letting her stay there for the night. Sinocie replies that, with magic tools at her disposal, she has hours and rooms to spare. She tells Coco not to worry about Qifrey and to worry on her text as she takes care of his teacher.
The girls observe Beldaruit from afar in the Argentgard. Agott goes first: she turns an unsteady sand path into a sand bridge using the spell Olruggio used at the Staircase River. Beldaruit is unimpressed, however: that spell is very practical, and therefore it is commonly used. Tetia and Richeh try next, conjuring flowers of sand and crystal ribbons, respectively. Beldaruit considers their spells adorable and promising, but not surprising. He decides to give them a demonstration and conjures a sand slide, incorporating the elements of all of their previous spells. He then evaporates in a rain of fireworks, revealing he was a smoke illusion all along.
Back at the medical spire, the girls are tried from chasing Beldaruit around all day to show him different spells. Coco realizes that, since Beldaruit is surrounded by amazing magic, it is going to be incredibly difficult to catch him off guard. Olruggio advises the girls to consider this not just as a test, but rather as a request from a client. They should spend some time observing him the next day in order to figure out what kind of magic he would like to see. Agott complains they only have three days to pass the test and they can’t afford to take time off from drawing spells. Olruggio replies that witches drawing without even picking a pen: witches draw on their minds.
The next day, the girls split to observe the Wise Beldaruit. Coco watches him playing around with a group of kids and wonders if surprising adults is more difficult because they know much more. Then, a young witch approaches Coco and recognizes her as a student from the same atelier as Agott. He asks if it’s true that she failed the second test but was allowed to retake it. Coco replies the exam merely got interrupted, but the boy is not convinced. He says her house kicked her out from their apprenticeship. When Coco asks, the boy tells her that Agott’s family was one of the two surviving houses from the Day of the Pact, and they have been carrying out apprenticeships for generations.
The boy tells Coco to be wary of Agott: at her debut as her family’s head apprentice, she stole someone else’s magic and tried to pass it as her own. Coco tries to defend her friend, but realizes Agott has been hearing the conversation. Agott runs away embarrassed and Coco chases after her. Agott asks Coco if she believes what the boy, Loroga, said about her. Coco tells her she doesn’t believe it, because she knows Agott is too hard-working to do something like that. Agott bows to show her true talent to her family so that they’ll regret casting her out. Hearing this, Coco realizes what kind of magic Beldaruit wants to see.
