Summary[edit | edit source]
Utowin has managed to clear a single windowway route around the giant leech monster, but clearing all of the other windowways remains Easthies immediate concern. He is also worried about the long-term impact of Outsiders witnessing other Pointed Cap Witches—such as Olruggio—using magic to wage war against the monster.
Meanwhile, Qifrey confronts Coco about the secrets she's been keeping. She finally admits that she and Tartah have been blackmailed into helping Custas and a Brimmed Cap Witch named Ininia gain an audience with King Deanreldy.[3] Despite being blackmailed, Coco still wants to try and help Custas and his adopted father, Dagda.[4] Qifrey offers to help her.
Elsewhere in the city, Ininia bemoans the fact that the leech monster's attack will likely be blamed on the Brimmed Caps at large. Communicating remotely through her staff, Restys admits there is nothing they can do about that, but they can still use the attack as a means of getting close to King Deanreldy so that they can hand him their "gift." Suddenly, the leech monster crashes through a nearby wall, causing brick and stone to rain down. Ininia is narrowly saved from the tentacles and falling debris by Galga, a former knight whose memory was previously wiped by Ininia.[5] While the two humans are unharmed, Ininia's staff is not so lucky—thereby severing her communication link with Restys.
