Chapter Eight of the second volume of the Witch Hat Atelier manga series.
Summary[edit | edit source]
Coco is resting on a windowsill, contemplating the events of chapter 6 and 7. She reflects on how she couldn't do anything other than come up with ideas, and decides that she will study to get better, but has no enthusiasm. Master Qifrey comes into the room and says she looks like she's about to fall asleep, to which Coco tells him that when thinking about how much more she'll need to study, she can't help but feel tired, causing Qifrey to take a break and come to follow him to the kitchen downstairs.
He takes her downstairs to the kitchen and shows her the magic cookpot, demonstrating how it can keep food from several years ago fresh. When Coco notices carapace yams, the professor asks of her if she would mind cooking one of them. Qifrey states that he'd heard that Coco had learned how to make a proper pyreball. After several attempts, making changes each time, she succeeds, and is able to cook the potato perfectly within the spell. Qifrey then tells her that she drew a lot, and asks her if she still feels tired.
To Coco's surprise, she is no longer tired. Qifrey tells her about how he hates getting wet, so when he was a boy, he was motivated to learn water magic so he wouldn't have to get wet washing things. He says that there is no better teacher than life, and suggests making the things she wants to learn be a part of her daily life.
Smelling the potato, Tetia and Richeh come down the stairs and ask to help prepare it, but Qifrey says to give Coco a chance to do that instead. She and Qifrey work together to prepare the meal, and once they finish, Coco says that they should eat outside and have a picnic. She asks Agott to come with them, but she declines saying she needs to study, and then tells them to look outside where it is raining. Tetia, and Coco comment on what a shame that is, but Qifrey uses a dispel water spell to block the rain, allowing them to go outside without getting wet.
Tetia, Coco, Richeh, and Master Qifrey have their picnic under a bridge. Just as they finish, the rain stops, creating a beautiful view with the sun shining through the clouds. Coco runs ahead to the Atelier to get Agott, saying she should see this too, when an unfamiliar man steps steps out of the house. Asking who Coco is and what does she want, Coco begins to panic. Qifrey runs up to check on her, and Coco shelters inside Qifrey's cloak and declares herself his apprentice, much to the unknown man's displeasure. Qifrey greets the man, whom he calls Olruggio. Olruggio says that Qifrey got more apprentices while his back was turned, to which Qifrey responds that Coco is a special case, as she is a victim of forbidden magic.
Olruggio grabs Coco's hand and tells her to come, saying they will have nothing to do with the Brimmed Caps here and states that he is taking her to the Knights Moralis.
