Chapter Fifty Three of the Witch Hat Atelier manga series.
Summary[edit | edit source]
Qifrey asks Agott why she's burning the spells she's been working on for weeks. She explains that since the person she wants to see it won't, it no longer serves a purpose. Qifrey realizes that Agott didn't want to grab the King's attention but instead Adina Arklaum's: her mother and Head Librarian at the Tower of Tomes. She gets angry and yells about wanting to prove her family wrong and make them regret banishing her by casting the greatest spell they've ever seen so they know what she's capable of. Agott understands that she's only thinking of herself and knew that Olruggio would forbid her from the beginning and that he had already lectured her about remembering the real purpose of magic.
Qifrey explains how Olruggio has a point and that witches need to be mindful of who will see their spells and that extravagant displays of magic, the type of spell that Agott wanted to show at the procession, have minimal usage in their current society compared to more ordinary ones. He goes on, saying that "a witch must be less concerned with what she can cast and more mindful of what she must not" and concludes that Agott should think twice about what she is creating or she's at risk of being used by someone for their own ends.
While this conversation happens, Tetia and Prince Eoleo have swapped cloaks and continued walking around the city. Eoleo expresses his happiness at being a witch for a day before getting on one knee, holding out his hand, and asking if she's also thought that outfits are like magic. Tetia happily agrees as she's said the same thing in the past and high fives him.
Eoleo starts to laugh and explains how he wanted to escort her in hand and then says how he was taught that humans and witches were two completely different existences from one another, and couldn't be friends. Tetia disagrees and says that they can indeed be friends and even thought of them as such since they met. Eoleo says that if they are friends then they can be like the tales of yore with witches and kings side by side. Tetia feels unease at this.
Qifrey continues explaining to Agott how magic should not handled by the royal family because King Deanreldy, also known as the King of Life, excels in medicine and is the last of an old house known for its healing-craft and was wiped from history by other witches on the day of the pact.
Eoleo goes home to his dad and says that he has found what he wishes to have and only needs to figure out how to make it his. He expresses his remorse that one of his dad's patients has died and that it wouldn't have to be like this is they had magic.
Tetia reflects on her experience meeting the prince and wonders why she felt as uneasy as she did when he talked about friendship. She resolves that its not right to say that two people can't be friends and that just because he's a prince doesn't mean he cant befriend someone he likes.
Agott has decided to make a contraption that explains to Olruggio that Qifrey says he'll evaluate putting it up for sale. Olruggio says he'll join in and look it over for her when she has something. Coco asks Qifrey is she can perform at the procession much to Agott's surprise.
